Avery Noella Berlin Thiessen
Born January 28, 2008, 7lbs12oz, 20in long.
Wow. What a crazy experience.
When "they" say that time goes even faster once you have kids, "they" are right. I feel like I haven't seen the last five months.
There's really no describing the emotions that come with having a child..but there are many!
As Avery's first act in her life, she obeyed David's request for her to start coming on a Sunday night so that he wouldn't have to go to work on Monday. I went into labour at 10pm on a Sunday night. I'll spare you the ugly details of labour, but suffice to say it hurt a lot but was over relatively quickly compared to some other stories I've heard. Avery was born at 3pm on Monday. I was shocked to hear the doctor say "It's a girl!" as I was convinced I was having a boy (as was everyone else who saw me, except for my Grandpa Archibald, who always maintained that I was having a girl). I'll listen to him next time.
The first couple weeks were a bit chaotic and overwhelming with sooo much transition and sooo little sleep. Not to mention I had assignments and mid-terms in the courses I was taking (online through my university). But even though we are far from family, our community in Montreal really stepped up and I don't think we cooked a meal for ourselves for almost 6 weeks! What a huge blessing that was!! David's mom also came after 2 weeks to help out for a couple weeks and later joined by his dad, which was a huge help as well.
At 6 weeks we were able to fly out to BC to introduce Avery to my family. She did great on the airplanes...minus the descent back into Montreal, but I found out later that evening that she had caught her first cold and the pressure was just too much for her congested little head.
We had another surprise when she was 11 weeks old and cut a tooth! It stuck around for a few weeks and then disappeared much to my dismay! I should have taken a picture so that people would at least believe that it was there!!

All in all, Avery has been a great kid from the beginning with a wonderful disposition and an easy smile. David and I fight over who gets to go get her out of bed in the morning because you get the biggest smile and squeal ever! She has grown like crazy and is in the 75% for her height and weight. She sleeps well most of the time now and is really interacting with the people and the world around her. It is such a neat experience to be able to introduce her to everything for the first time ever.
She really enjoys music and her jolly jumper (but mostly if she has an audience to show off to:o) I also take walks almost everyday with her in the babyBjorn and she talks the entire time, charming everyone along the way. She says dada now and can sit on her own for a bit too.
So I think we have adjusted fairly well to this new stage in our lives...sometimes we still look at Avery and wonder where she came from...but we're glad she's here. One great thing about having kids in the social province of Quebec are the benefits! As well as my maternity leave, David also gets to take some time off on paternity leave. We will be taking full advantage of that later this summer when we go out to BC again to see our families for a month. In the meantime, we are enjoying another fantastic summer in Montreal. We have gone camping (Avery quite enjoyed it), swimming, to the fireworks and the jazz fest. And next weekend we are headed up to Quebec City to take in the 400th Anniversary celebrations. We've heard nothing but good things about them so far.
Well that pretty much puts the last 5 months in a nutshell. Hope this finds all of you well and enjoying your summer.
