We made it!

Well....after a 2.5 hour drive to Grande Prairie, 3 hour flight to Vancouver, 14 hour flight to Hong Kong, 2 hour layover, and 2.5 hour flight to Bangkok...we've made it to Thailand...which is 15 hours ahead of those of you in Fort St. John and 13 hours ahead of those of you in Montreal. Our hotel is great - clean and safe, so we're off to a good start.

On our way!

The last few days have been interesting. It's hard to think about the fact that we'll be airborne to Asia shortly when right now we're still working on the farm - fixing equipment, cleaning bins, etc. Hopefully it sinks in shortly so that we can get our butts in gear and start packing. We each have one 55 litre backpack and we only want to fill it about 2/3 full so that we have room for other stuff and room to jam the bags into tighter spots...but trying to determine what is a "necessary" item to pack and what is a challenge.

So yeah, we're off Monday to Vancouver. Tuesday we have a 11.5 hour flight to Hong Kong, followed by another 3 hours to Bangkok...with the whole time change thing, we leave Tuesday afternoon and arrive there at midnight Wednesday night, so we lose around 14 hours on the way there...but there we will be! We have our first 4 nights booked and then the rest we'll have to figure out as we go. We will do our best to be regularily updating the blog with lots of pictures and stories and we would love to hear from you all via email so that we can stay in touch with what you're all up to as well.

Lastly, we may change the format of our blog entries a bit...instead of just telling you what we're doing, we may start doing our own individual "journal" entries to chronicle our own thoughts and feelings about the trip a bit more.

Anyway, that's all for now.....see you soon ;-)

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

You may think it's a little early for Christmas greetings...but since we're going to be somewhere in Cambodia on December 25, we decided to celebrate with my family a little early. We decorated our tree, had the big turkey dinner and played lots of games. We were interrupted by a power outage when some local kids decided to shoot out the power lines for target practice:o) We got power back 15 hours later!!!

FOR MORE PICTURES FROM THE LAST WHILE, CHECK OUT THE GALLERY

We've posted a bunch of pictures in our gallery from Christmas and the rodeo and stuff. Check it out if you've got a minute.

Last week David and I took care of my nephew Sean for two days....

It was fun but, oh my goodness...it helped us realize that we are not ready for that full-time yet. He woke us up at 5:30am and by the time the sun came up we had played soccer, hockey and started, but never finished three movies! Wow, I just don't know where he gets his energy from...and it just doesn't stop all day! But we scored some big points on the second day when we took him to town to go swimming, to McDonalds and the Santa Clause parade. Does it get any better than that?!?!

Edmonton trip

Well, we're back from Edmonton - we went on a little road trip on Wednesday of last week to take Mom Esau to the Cross Cancer Clinic there for her regular CAT scan and MRI. The scans showed no change in the tumor in the last 4 months - disappointing that things are not improving at all, but it is also good to know that things are not currently getting worse either. We finished with the appointments Thursday evening but stayed in Edmonton until Sunday morning as my parents drove up from Saskatchewan to spend the weekend there with us

The Canadian Finals Rodeo was going on in Edmonton over this last weekend and we managed to score some tickets at the last minute so all of us could go on Saturday afternoon. It was Awesome!! We were only 12 rows up from the chutes and got to watch the best cowboys in Canada compete in all the different events. The only downer of the afternoon was when one of the bull-riders got thrown off and smashed in the face by the bull's forehead...it is pretty unsettling to see someone staggering around spitting out all their teeth on slow motion on the big screen.....but other than that it was a really fun experience. We have a bunch of pics from that and from the last little while that I'd love to post...but I'm not sure when we'll get to town next. I'll let you know when they're up.

The harvest is done!!!!

Well, after 195 hours (between the two of us) in 7 days, we have been able to finish the combining...and just in time...the day after we finished it started snowing!! It was an exhausting week but it feels so good to have gotten it all finished. For a while there it didn't look like we would get the majority of our canola, so we're all feeling pretty thankful. All in all, we couldn't be happier with how the harvest went. We got everything done as it was ready and have been able to get other projects done in the meantime too. For the very last field (400 acres) we had five combines going at once so we were able to get a lot done in a relatively short amount of time. That was pretty fun. We'll have some photos of that operation posted in our gallery shortly.
Now that the field work is done, we will be working on getting all the equipment, etc ready to be stored for the winter as well as hauling some bales and doing some more work with the cows. That should keep us pretty busy until we're ready to go...IN 22 SLEEPS!!!!
This week, on Wednesday, David and I are going with my mom and dad to Edmonton for my mom's MRI check-up on Thursday. We'll let you know how it goes. David's parents will be meeting us there for the weekend so it will be really good to hang out with them for a bit. We'll also be able to do some shopping for a few things that we're still needing for the trip... it will take a bit of the pressure off for the one day that we have in Vancouver before flying out to Bangkok. That's it for now!
