Xbox 360?

Kirk has me babysitting his Xbox 360 since he's too busy to use it, so I've been renting a few games and trying it out. It's definitely a giant leap forward from my Gamecube in terms of graphics/sound. It's a bit like getting to 'play' a movie. For any sports nut, NHL 2007 from EA is amazing for the 360. I just rented Gears of War and had also rented NBA Street Homecourt (Amazingly detailed graphics with a great storyline to play along to - a great game to play with a bunch of people). The system is lots of fun and the ability to play online is a great option, though I can't take part without a paid Xbox Live membership. Having the ability to download demos of games and be able to try out the first few levels is nice as well, especially since Blockbuster charges $10/week for a game rental now.

To show how geeky I really am, you can check out my Xbox gamer tag and all my "achievements." Seriously. I eat this stuff up. Horribly geek and terribly fun.

As If I Didn't Want An XBox 360 Enough Already...

XBox 360

Xbox Live will feature European board games such as Settlers of Catan & Carcassonne.

Cough!, Cough!, ahem.

Sorry.. something in my throat. And if you're thinking to yourself 'I can just go play those games right now without some silly XBox thingy' you're absolutely right - but you can't just go play that with Matthew in Montreal now can you?

And yes, there's a huge difference between wanting and needing something. So to clarify, I need an XBox. :)

Monster Truck

Get out the red neck in ya and play this monster truck game that plays a bit like the old Excitebike on Nintendo back in the day.

The Revolution Is No More

Nintendo Wii

Nintendo's next generation console was previously code-named 'Revolution' but it has now been renamed 'Wii' - as in 'we'. A quick poll of the office here found 3 people who thought 'Revolution' was a better name.

Sims 2 Body Shop

I don't know how to write this without it sounding creepy, but here goes. They've released a Sims 2 Character creation utility in advance of the game coming out later this month for the Mac.

This entry is here for one person and one person only - but he's probably (hopefully?) too embarrased to admit he's waiting for the Sims 2 to arrive that he won't acknowledge this entry with a comment.

Rainy Day Game

Rainy day here (week?) here in Saskatoon so not much to do but play games and wish we were back in Australia. Oh wait, it rained lots there too.

Speaking of Australia, we got our photo book back from Apple/iPhoto and it looks great. Slick and easy. It's like scrapbooking for people who hate scrapbooking. You don't end up paying much more (sometimes less) if you factor in printing out all your pictures and paying for a photo album. The biggest drawback is that it takes a couple weeks to get and usually you want to show off your pictures as soon as you get home.

Phil, I don't think this can be considered camping. :)

Sims 2 Coming Soon - Travis This is For You

The Sims 2 Now At Final Candidate

May 17, 2005 8:40 AM

Aspyr has recently posted on its project status page that The Sims 2 is now at the final candidate stage of development. At this point, the game will go through its final testing and will be sent to Electronic Arts for final approval. If all goes well, the game will be declared golden master and will be sent to manufacturing, putting it on track to be released sometime in June.

Be on the lookout for an in-depth IMG preview based on a recent beta shortly.

Sims 2

The Sims 2 is out. No sign of a Mac version for some time yet which is probably a good thing. I despise the game on all levels, yet I know that if I got a copy I'd sit and play it for hours straight.

Vietnam Ain't For Sissies

Great quotes from today's Penny Arcade:

Well, except for one thing: my stepdad says that the way he and his guys would fish in 'Nam was to press a grenade with the pin pulled down into a jar of peanut butter. They would then drop this jar from a great height via helicopter, and he tells me that when the jar hit the surface of the water and cracked, the grenade was released and the resultant shockwave of water, glass, shrapnel, and I assume peanut butter would either kill fish or just kick the shit out of them, causing them to float where they could be scooped up by the Huey. Okay, that's all the facts. No more, that's it.

And:

The Gamespot review refers to the difficulty of managing these craft, and while they might be difficult compared to jeeps, I only had to crash one or two before I got the hang of it. To compare, flying helicopters in DC is like bending a spoon with your mind or trying to walk a tyrannosaur. To say they are unwieldy is to have a good shot at Understatement Of The Year.

And one more:

Since the "on foot" gameplay has always been of a very high lethality index in this series, there's no reason not to just take this class every time and act as the agent of divine retribution. Between your disposable rocket launcher and your heavy machinegun, you represent a buffet of death that is open twenty-four hours a day.

(sigh) I miss the days of playing BF1942. It was great fun to have everyone at work united in the common goal of killing each other. I wonder if I could somehow justify using my professional allowance at work to buy a better video card for my home PC that would allow me to play BF1942 again? That's pretty good use of some student's tutition, doncha think? (Note: It's not really someone's tution - it's partially from tution but mostly from union dues and sales at the store) Maybe that's why there's been so much tension at work lately, there hasn't been enough video game violence! I think I could do a study to show that video game violence helps, not hinders, the advancment of the human race.

I'll see if I can pawn that idea off on to some psych grad student that lives in the basement we call an office so I can get back to playing BF1942.
