I got the download last week. I've listened to it a few times while studying, but haven't had a chance to really listen to it. It's good, as usual, but at a "glance" it doesn't seem like much of a departure from their older stuff.
I suppose I would agree with you as far as the general "fridge noise" it creates. Actually, the song Nude has been around since the OK computer days when it was also known as Big Ideas (Don't Get Any). On the whole the album is much easier for your average person to listen to than past albums. But the album is different from Hail to the Thief and certainly those previous. It is smoother than previous, it's almost warm and soft. Radiohead isn't a band that changes for changes sake, they evolve. the Bends wasn't shocking if you really listened to Pablo Honey, Ok Computer wasn't shocking if you listened to the Bends, even Kid A/Amnesiac weren't so much shocking as not the direction or distance from OK Computer one expected. Hail to the Thief made sense, especially when you heard Johnny's solo album (Thom's album was almost a manic prediction of this one.) And if you read their blog and saw what they were listening to, you can hear that in the subtle changes in this album. On the whole it's not terribly different, but it's what they wanted to do without anyone telling them what to do. To me that makes it even better.
