breakfast with dori, lunch with k*rk, new radiohead DVD.. pretty good day. found a lot of things at the music shops i would like to have bought but i refrained. i might need to go back before the week is over and pick some more stuff up. here's what i didn't buy:

Gypsy style acoustic guitar (40% off)
Dead like Me - Season 1 & 2 (15% off)
the Complete Narnia Chronicles by the BBC (25% off) - forgot how cheesy it was, so it's probably a no go. only 30$ though.
Unkle - Psyience Fiction (25% off) - i think i'll order get it on vinyl instead

i saw other stuff too, but the Dead like Me and the guitar are the main things i'll be considering. there is also a queens of the stone age DVD but i'll wait to see what k*rk thinks of it (the girl at CD plus couldn't shut up about it.)

back into the darkness.....

on Top Gear a couple weeks ago i saw a bloke take a desiel Jaguar S type around this track in 9.59 seconds. then the young lady in this clip did it in 9.12 s. here she is doing it in a ford transit van... scary.

Sabine Schmitt - Ford Transit vs. Nurburgring

this is funny too: Jeremy Clarkson taking an Ariel Atom out for a spin

on monday night Wade gave a little rant on Christmas and gift giving. having given what he said a little more thought i have decided he's wrong. wade advocated ceasing to give gifts in opposition to the consumerism and greed that now permeates our western culture. i have come to conclusion that not giving gifts is in fact giving up on Christmas.. or at the very least admitting defeat. what i believe we should be doing is reclaiming the original spirit of giving gifts (as the wise men did, this whole thing about the gift of Christ is wonky as that's more of an Easter thing.) we should give gifts that symbolize who a person is and who they are to you, not what they want. also we should give gifts because we want to. so many things these days revolve around implied obligation (do unto other so they'll have to do unto you.) if i get you a gift you should get me a gift. if i send you a card you should send me a card. if i have you over for diner.. and so on. and if you really want to reclaim the religious celebration that Christmas is supposed to be, on Christmas morning GO TO CHURCH. go to any church, try a different church, but pick up your family and go to church. "but Christmas is for family". riiiight, and going to church will destroy your family and you won't get to spend any time with them? except you went to church together.

and about the fact we don't put as much emphasis on Easter as we do Christmas. this is very true, and in our churches we should certainly make a much bigger deal about Easter. lent, palm sunday, good friday, Easter, the holy week, ascensions day. lots of time there to make a big deal about something that is a big deal.

(i may need to edit this yet)

The Chronicles of Narnia: the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe is the most respectful mutilation of a classic novel i've ever seen. it is very done and is probably 75% out of the book. certain things were changed for what i assume are ignorant hollywood/Disney conformity issues ("a movie must possess these things to be good") and others were just poor choices (Aslan sounds very weak and does not exude the greatness He should). overall i'd say go out and enjoy it, it's certainly worth the money.

the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe comes out on friday and i'm quite excited to see it. i do however have great fears about there treatment of the book. while many would not hold the purist ideal i do, i found the changes/liberties taken in the Lord of the Rings to be most disappointing. in watching the Narnia trailer i can already see things they have changed. the children were not restricted in their use of the house, only told to stay out of the way of tourists. also, the children were never told to leave the professor alone and seem comfortable talking to him about the whole "lucy thinks she went into another country in the wardrobe" thing. this is out of a few minutes of trailer.... and so i'm a little anxious. (i realize someones shotty job of translating one of the greatest childrens books ever written to a movie isn't a huge life threatening cautastrophy.. but still.)
